Pete Johns even made the trip from Ill to sail 6 scrub races on pretty damn good ice with better than expected winds. Sailed between Big Island and Greenwood shore. Harry and Dr report the main lake froze solid on Friday night. It is smooth as glass. It has been 5-20F for 3 days now so some of us are going on an adventure about 10 AM Monday to check it out! We will sail from either Harry's or Tonka Bay Marine landing. Many of us have Xmas eve plans so will be a short day for some.
I have a couple photos posted in images and still can't figure out how to post them in the body of this!
Bald Eagle has some ice. AS ALWAYS SOME BAD SPOTS. The island tips for sure!
jd is setting up his new skeeter fri am on the beach next to tonka bay marina. drive on access for trailers by the marina. other Dns set up. ice is smooth and good from there to harry's house. also can put on at harry's. with cold temp, watch out for working cracks. main lake still open, but should freeze on fri. hopefully can sail out there soon. meyer
All the Harbors within the big Bay are locked in with smooth black ice.Only chocie is which Bay to sai,Birch,Amethyst,Sturgeon....Forecast looks good all thru the week.
Minnetonka’s own Maddy Kennedy was recently featured in Sports Illustrated (12/17/12) “Faces in the Crowd.” Maddy was recognized for leading the University of Hawaii sailing team to a win in the prestigious Pacific Coast Conference Fall Championships. Maddy had four top finishes in 12 races to win the “A” division.
Maddy is Steve Kennedy's (us5096) daughter. When on break from her studies Maddy is frequently seen ripping around Tonka in her DN. She will be home for the holidays so make sure you congratulate Maddy if you see her on ther ice!
Green has 4 plus inches of mostly smooth ice......I sailed the area the size of 2012's western regional...a bit bigger.....5445
Not looking good! The good ice from Friday after 1/4 inch of rain has many low spots and now developing a shell ice issue at 27F. The ice is still confirmed at 3-5 inches but you can see a good 2 inches of water and ripples in this low spot just west of my home. I did not walk into this depression. The other photo is 5 feet from the ripples and a good inch if water with 1/4 inch shell! Bloom is on his way to further check it out. The wind is a perfect 10 mph. Stay tuned..
Coped from Minnesota iceboaters on FB. Hope the photos come thru.
Has anyone found ice on Tonka that is safe to sail?
Crystal bay froze earlier this week so last night I ventured out in front of my house but it is way too thin to be considered safe or sailable.
Has anyone checked any of the other bays?

Congratulations to Peter Orebeke on his hard fought battle in the Silver Fleet.
A Giant Congratulations to our Man in Mound, Mark Christensen, who put it all together and didn't let this one get away. We all know he has speed, and it is great to see him come out on top. Sometimes deserves do matter, and he deserved this one.
