Olaf Harken Sails On

Vey sad news.
Olaf Harken passed away quietly in his sleep on October 21, 2019.
We have all experienced Olaf's genius. You'd be hard pressed to find a DN that does not have something "Harken" on it.
Our condolences to his family, his friends and the entire Harken community.

Ice-Out Declared On Lake Minnetonka

At 1:48 pm on April 20, 2019, the iceboat season on Minnetonka ended. Coincidentally, this is the exact same moment that the Water Patrol declared Minnetonka to be ice free. You now have plenty of time to work on your gear.

Thunder Bay this weekend anyone?? 3/30 - 3/31

Mike Madge has been really tearing it up this week in Thunder Bay. Plenty of ice left. This coming weekend looks pretty promising. Freezing at night, nice warm springtime sailing temperatures during the day. Looks good to me. Anybody else interested in a spring road trip? My marks are in the trailer. How about a 10 lap Canadian free for all!!

It aint over, but.....

Sorry, folks, but the end is near. First, the “Powers-To-Be” moved up the the first day of spring. We traditionally celebrated the beginning of spring on March 21. Now, however, astronomers and calendar manufacturers say spring starts one day earlier, March 20. By my calculations, that’s one day of sailing we will never get back.

Deb Whitehorse Honored

IDNIYRA Executive Secretary Deb Whitehorse was honored, among others, Saturday evening by Lake City Minnesota Mayor Mark Nichols when she was presented with a “Key to the City.”

Lake City has a deep and rich iceboat history and had just hosted the DN Western Region Championships, the ISA’s and the Northwestern’s over three consecutive weekends. The Mayor cited Deb’s longstanding commitment and dedication to the great sport of iceboating as the reason for her selection. Mayor Nichols presented the award during the Northwestern Regatta which was sailed on Lake Pepin.

Take a lap around pepin on Merlin!
