There are other regattas also trying to be scheduled this same weekend. The Western Regional Championship will not be sailed if the NIYA (Northwests) is called ON in the region. It will be sailed, however, if the NIYA regatta is outside the region or if the Central Region Championships are called for the same weekend.

At 10:00 local this ice reporter walked on Lake Phalen, St Paul, MN... and was surprised by the lack of snow cover on the ice. Presumably there are other lakes in the area in better condition.
Conditions: there is about 1.5" of light snow covering 90% of this non-motorized lake. The ice is moderately rough, it's hard without sailing to know if it's rougher snow ice/refrozen slush than Pepin was at the NA's last winter...
Lake Monona is sailable. Greg Simon and Doug Kolner checked several area lakes today.
Greg reports that the east end of Lake Monona rates as 8 out of 10, with over 8" of ice, and a light pebbly surface.
Greg and others will sail the lake on Wednesday. Here are the schedule of events:
Thursday, January 1: 10:00 AM 4LIYC Bloody Mary Eye Opener & Holiday Series
Friday, January 2: Tuning & Scrub racing
A decision will be made by noon on Friday whether to hold the Grand Slam Regatta in conjunction with 4LIYC club racing.

From our newest "Ice Reporter", Urgelt, his video accurately tells the story of local conditions in the whole state Minnesota right now... Sure looks representative of everything I've seen or heard of.
Closest known boatable big ice, Springfield IL, see recent blog posts. of course, you'd have miles to go before you sleep.
a rip around with the Commodore of the IDNIYRA.
No go on the '08 National. Snowed out.
As for when the '09 will be scheduled, the pinwheel is spinning and the commodore is looking for his dart.

Right near the end of the video, when I round the second time I hit 63.5mph on the GPS. The video ends when I jump the small heave running thru the course..
Here's what it was like ripping around on Friday of the 2008 Western Challenge.
