"It is with respect and sadness that we announce that Wendell Sherry lost his heroic 10 month battle with cancer. His family is thankful he is finally at peace. They want to take a moment to thank everyone for their love, support, and prayers. This was inspirational to both him and his family. Wendell was a winner when it came to life on many levels. Family, business, and sailing were his strong suits. Wendell tried out for the Olympics with his brother, Lorne, in the Flying Dutchman class in 1976. He built his own observatory near Lake Geneva. Hours before his death, he sat up in bed, asked for a scotch, enjoyed it as he spoke with his family for 15 minutes, and said, 'see ya later'."

Wendell has a nice big family
JD and myself just got back from Chicago. It was very nice to see the great family that Wendell has. It was nice to celebrate J. Wendell's iceboating passion with the other iceboaters, too.
Wendell was always the biggest supporter of our early season regatta and was a big part of what we do. He was the best competitor and sportsman.
It just won't be the same out on the ice without Wendell. I never bested Wendell in a regatta. I remember being door handle to door handle with him at the 2010 NA in Thunderbay, he looked over his shoulder, saw me there, and footed a bit and drove away.. He got 14th and I got 17th.. Always an adventure to race with Wendell.;-(

You can still beat him...
"Wingnut" set the bar pretty high for you, and a lot of his friends.
If you ever best 14th at the NA's you'll remember you've finally gotten past him, once. ; )
