Promising Report from Springfield, IL

The chatter about ice is slim to none on all sites. What gives? How about hearing form Indiana or the top of the Lower Peninsula in Michigan near Traverse City? What happened to the ice in Ontario last night? If there are no ice reports, at least I know to have a passport and numbers on my sail...

Springfield Ice Access

I believe 4148, Tim Dixon, is attempting to explain that to gain access to Lake Springfield, IL, an application must be filed with the city and "some strings pulled". I recall that process being accomplished for a Western Regional many years ago, and suppose that is still a requirement.

Consequently, it is difficult (but not impossible) to take an event to Springfield, just as is the case on Lake Minnetonka.

Otherwise, the Land of Lincoln can be a hospitable place to sail, winter and summer.

DN 805

there was a conversation

They can be reasonable people I'm sure...they let us do the last one. A DN Regatta is what most regulators call a casual event, and they find all the IDNIYRA's safety history most satisfactory.

Think they own the lake, and generally do, except in matters of navigation and anchorage... it flows into the Mississippi, and since 1787 it's been ok to travel and anchor there.

St Paul MN let me put 8,000 spectators, tents and pony rides on frozen lake Phalen for an IceBoat event, a lake that St Paul thinks they own as well.

Springfield Ice?

Just called a city parks official at Springfield Lake to ask about permits. She said the lake is mostly open water. I also just learned that one of my favorite landsailing spots at Playa, New Mexico is now closed to the public. Bummer, bummer.

Sailing Basin, off of IBYC,south of Lindey Bridge is froze, north is open as was the case during the 93 regional.Participents of that event will recall board sailor north of bridge while we held regional on a foot of clear ice w/ heavy drifts. The new Dallman 4 power plant outputs warm water, less then Dallman 3,however the North end has opened up.launching off private access.with all the rain edge @ ramp has eroded.

ciyoti knows his lake better

ciyoti knows his lake better than the park department...

today

hard pebble ice, gusts through the 20's,very fast

Is it good?

So is the ice of a quality that we can have the regatta on it?

Or does the permit issues deny us?

Ice is good, area is of marginal quality by size.

That is the good news, bad news is permit issues and limited access due to shoreline erosion @ public launch make Lake Springfield not practical.Have sailed the last 3 days. Area is .75mix1.25 mi. N-S course orientation best. I'm going sailing now. Ice is hard white surface. Under strong late Feb sun it softens @ 35 degrees. Forecast is for highs in mid thirties to upper thirties next week. I am pre registered for N.A.'s.Hope it goes @ Torch Lake.
