2009 DN Westerns: Day 2
No sailing today...
The wind deities neglected to favor Lake Pepin with wind until well after the regatta was called "complete" and most people had packed up. Many of the local sailors (including two Ice-Optis) were out ripping around in the freshening breeze as I pulled out of The Pickle Factory parking lot at 2:00pm.
A course was set in the light morning breeze, and a race was started. Steve Orlebeke missed the time-limit on the first lap by two minutes, and the black flag was run through the fleet on the 4-wheeler.

Super time
That was three wonderful days sailing! I logged 200 miles under the keel, had a decent performance in a good breeze, countless eagles and wildlife soaring overhead, dinner at a 4 star cafe, smoked pheasant & venison sausage with girl scout coookie chasers on the ice, a sunburned face, & wide smiles all-around.
Watch out for young Sam - thanks to Meyer he now knows how to bend a mast and gave a lot of us a run for the money during the scrub races. Great job, Sam!

after the awards...
As expected, just after the awards,the breeze filled in and seven or 8 DN's scrub raced until about 6:00 pm Sunday. One sailor logged 104 gps miles in a DN on Sunday!
Remarkably, with two days in the mid to high 50 degree range the ice on Pepin held up to such a degree that skinny inserts held up all weekend.
