Big Day….
Miracles do happen- And the weatherman ain’t always right!
Yesterday was supposed to be light and fickle but at about 1030 the breeze shifted south and increased…. And increased some more…. And then increased a little more just for kicks.
Full-on, heads-up sailing was the order if the day- Four races sailed, each one in a bit more breeze, hoar frost blowing around, fast and furious all day-
The gangs all in NY and they got the mini-qualifier in!
That's a great start to what's been a difficult regatta.

Dang it.
We got a lot of snow in just a few hours. It started snowing hard at 9:00am, just like they said, and then it let up a little and now it's been snowing all day. There's probably 4" of snow. It seems light but it's really not.
Good thing some of the most proactive iceboaters from the Minnesota group are heading down to north west IOWA to save the day. Lets keep our fingers crossed.
I guess Lake Champlain and Montreal have a bad forecast now, Lake Geneva gets a 'not possible'. Lakes were checked further south but were also found to be no good.
Just a reminder that official announcements for the DN North Americans are being posted at ice.idniyra.org. Just click on the "hotline" link and it will take you to the most current update. (McD did a nice job .. . . again.)
Next update scheduled for 8 PM tonight (Thursday).

Have been waiting all season for a wind event when it's not + 40 or -20 degrees. Have been waiting two years for the right ice conditions for studded tires. We've now got friable lumpy ice and a Thursday wind forecast in the mid 20's. Could be an interesting day.

Kent Baker, IDNIYRA Vice Commodore, wrote this intersting missive on the history of the DN North American Chanpionships…. Interesting reading as the NA’s celebrates it’s 60th birthday this year! Enjoy…

2014 Western Regional Regatta – ON
Greetings from Green Lake, WI
The deepest lake in the state…luckily for iceboating!
I am pleased to announce that the 2014 Western Regional Regatta is on for this weekend on what appears to be the only sailable ice in the region.
Date: Saturday, Jan. 11 – Sunday, January 12, 2014
Launch: Tentatively County Park on Hwy K – South West end of Green Lake.
Drive on ramps, rest rooms, parking lot. Reilley’s Pub nearby.
Western Regionals are Tentatively called ON!
Western Regional Commodore Julie Jankowski reports that the one-week-postponed Western Regionals is tentatively called on for Green Lake, WI., on January 11 and 12, 2014.
Racing will take place out in the center of the lake. Even before this week's deep freeze the center had 3-4 inches of regatta quality ice with no snow. Local sailors have been sailing various parts of the lake for several weekends now.
Final call and hotel information will be made Wednesday, January 8 at 6 PM. See, dnamerica.org/forum/ for more information.
Rick Wilfert, from Harken, sent word that 12 southern Wisconsin Nites ripped it up this past weekend on Green Lake, and they hope to do it again this coming weekend (Jan. 11-12). He made an open invitation to all Minnesota Nite owners to join in. Check iceboat.org later in the week for final details, or call Pewaukee hotline: 262-367-1656.
Note: The DNs are scheduled to be there as well to sail their Western Regional, but it's a big mutha of a lake so all is good.

Mark “Doctor” Christensen (DN 4824) took top honors at the 2013 Holiday Classic Regatta. The one day event was held December 27, 2013, on Lake St Clair’s Anchor Bay near Clinton Twp., Michigan.
Three races were contested in light air on very soft ice as temperatures reached the mid 40’s. Slippers were the runners for the day. 25 boats competed, including US 44.
The Doctor smoked everyone and easily won all three races. Chad Atkins (DN 4487) and James Thieler (DN 5224), both from Rhode Island, finished second and third. Mike Bloom (DN 5432) finished fifth.
